A Bold Transition: Future Coalition’s Sunset and the Launch of Future Incubator

After much reflection, thoughtful discussion, and difficult decision-making, Future Coalition has decided to officially sunset as an organization.

The decision to close the chapter of Future Coalition was not made lightly. As an organization dedicated to resourcing young changemakers and driving transformational social and political change, we faced significant fundraising challenges. Unfortunately, our efforts to secure the necessary funding to sustain and grow our work in youth organizing were not enough to meet the demands of our vision. This is not a reflection of the incredible impact we’ve had, but rather a stark reminder of how the current nonprofit and philanthropic structures are limiting and hindering our movements.

Future Coalition has done incredible work in the last seven years of operation. We’ve empowered youth organizers by awarding nearly $2,000,000 in grants through the Youth Direct Action Fund. We’ve contributed to the record number of young people showing up to vote in the last several election cycles through our civic engagement program. We’ve facilitated collaboration and coalition building with hundreds of youth-led groups organizing across a range of issues including climate justice, gun violence prevention, racial justice, and voting. We’ve fiscally sponsored, amplified, trained, and mentored countless young people committed to creating change. Future Coalition’s impact has been profound, and it will continue to reverberate in the communities we’ve touched.

While this iteration of Future Coalition is coming to an end, it is not the end of our mission. Future Incubator, a fiscal sponsorship program tailored to the specific demands of youth and grassroots organizers, one of Future Coalition’s signature programs, has launched as an independent nonprofit organization! This is a continuation of Future Coalition’s commitment to providing resources and support to young changemakers who have developed projects that address the most pressing challenges of our time. We invite you to follow along with them @future_incubator and support their efforts to resource young people pushing for change in their communities.

Future Coalition’s legacy endures in the leaders, campaigns, and communities we helped seed and in the capacities and coalitions that will keep growing long after this chapter closes. While it’s natural to feel bittersweet, social movements move in cycles: organizations rise and recede to make space for new energy, new strategies, and new voices. We don’t mark this transition with sorrow, but with gratitude and determination. We know the work lives on in all of us, and we, the people, remain steadfast in our commitment to building a just, liberated, and sustainable world.

Our Wins

We engaged thousands of young people to participate in civic life.

We mobilized Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts to turn out young voters in the 2018 midterm elections, 2020 election, 2021 Georgia runoffs, and NYC elections in 2021. We ran successful field, voter registration, and voter protection programs that contributed to the historic youth turnout in the 2022 midterms.

Our microgrant fund, Youth Direct Action Fund, granted $1.9M to youth-focused efforts.

Since 2019, we’ve supported over 800 groups to support the next generation of youth-led and youth-focused grassroots efforts to create change in their local communities, reaching every state in the nation.

Our fiscal sponsorship program, Future Incubator, supported 29 fiscal projects.

Recognition from our peers, particularly the 50+ organizations from the National Network of Fiscal Sponsors (NNFS), validated our innovative approach to focus on youth changemakers. Future Incubator has now spun off into its own entity, a testament to the enduring legacy of Future Coalition.

We resourced hundreds of young organizers to build movements.

This included paying over 1,500 young people to canvas in the 2022 election and investing over $390,000 in youth-centered groups in the 2024 election.

We managed the infrastructure for the US Climate Strike Coalition.

This intergenerational, youth-led coalition of over 500 climate and social justice organizations supported Gen Z’s wave of the youth climate justice movement. The Coalition led efforts such as the September 20th, 2019 US Climate Strikes, the largest youth climate mobilization the country has ever seen.

We developed the largest network of young activists.

We focused on creating an online community and strategic partnerships that focused on thoughtful collaboration and relationship-building with young people across the country.
