On the heels of our success convening and supporting a youth-led coalition that mobilized around the Georgia runoffs, we were excited to shift our momentum to New York City. In Our Hands is a youth-led group of NYC-based youth activists and community organizations. The coalition brings together a diverse array of issue-based organizations to unify around the needs of NYC’s youth in local elections.
The In Our Hands Coalition was able to engage over 7,000 attendees through over 70 voter engagement, education, and registration events. We worked to spread awareness about the primary election and new Ranked Choice Voting format through innovative engagement with our peers. Additionally, we built a comprehensive youth platform with concrete steps local officials can take to improve the lives of young people in New York; 55 candidates endorsed the platform, including a majority of City Council primary winners.
Future Coalition coordinated Peaches for Progress, a youth-led, intergenerational coalition working to mobilize young people throughout Georgia for the runoff elections. The coalition’s efforts to use experimental organizing tactics to mobilize youth audiences was featured on NBC News, Bloomberg, and The Hill.
Working so closely with new and established young organizers in Georgia allowed Peaches for Progress to send over 1.8 million text messages, register 2,800 new voters, and plan community engagement events throughout the runoff cycle that centered around engaging local organizers.
