Los Angeles, CA — The devastating wildfires engulfing Los Angeles have exposed a grim reality that youth activists have known for some time: our leaders have failed to address the climate crisis with the urgency it demands. This is not just an environmental disaster; it is a human catastrophe caused by systemic neglect, corporate greed, and years of inaction that have left communities vulnerable and lives at risk. For too long, our elected leaders have been beholden to the whims of corporate polluters who prioritize profits over people.
“For too long, young people have raised the alarm about the climate crisis, only to see their concerns dismissed,” said Corryn G. Freeman, Executive Director of the Future Coalition. “These fires are the direct result of a system that prioritizes fossil fuel profits over people’s lives, leaving frontline communities to face the consequences alone. This is our generation’s call to action—and we demand accountability.”
The flames consuming neighborhoods and displacing families are a stark reminder of the human cost of inaction. For working-class families, Indigenous communities, youth, and people of color on the frontlines, these fires are not isolated incidents; they are part of a growing pattern of climate disasters that disproportionately harm those least responsible for the crisis.
“This is not just about fires—it’s about a failure of leadership,” Freeman continued. “Young people and communities of color are already bearing the brunt of climate chaos. Leaders must urgently adopt the priorities of those who will live with the consequences of their inaction for decades to come.”
Future Coalition calls on leaders to act immediately:
- Declare a climate emergency and commit to bold, systemic solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to renewable energy.
- Invest in frontline and vulnerable communities to build resilience against climate disasters.
- Hold fossil fuel corporations accountable for their role in exacerbating the climate crisis.
The outrage expressed by youth activists is not just a demand for change—it is a call for justice and equity. Digital platforms are amplifying their frustration as they see elected officials prioritize corporate profits over public safety, leaving communities to rely on mutual aid and grassroots efforts to survive.
“This is not only about the fires burning in Los Angeles today—it’s also about the fires our generation will inherit if nothing changes,” Freeman added. “We are demanding that our leaders stop failing us and start building a future where people, not profits, come first.”
Future Coalition urges elected officials at all levels to act with urgency, meet the demands of a generation, and commit to transformative climate solutions that ensure dignity, equity, and sustainability for all.
